Families of victims gathered at Juliaca’s Inca Manco Capac Airport in Peru commemorated 18 people killed by state agents in 2023 and denounce the obstruction of justice through the deactivation of the investigative team.
Family members of the victims mobilized this Friday, January 9, to remember the 18 people killed at Juliaca Airport between 2022 and 2023.

These deaths occurred amid repression by the Armed Forces, acting under orders from the Government led by former President Dina Boluarte.
The families vehemently condemned the deactivation of the team of prosecutors responsible for investigating these killings, describing the measure as a significant blow to both justice and memory.
Raul Samillan, President of the Association of Victims and Martyrs, recalled that 50 people were injured during those events and questioned the denial of justice to the victims’ relatives.
Juliaca, a city in the Puno region, was the epicenter of the protests where, on January 9, 2023, 18 demonstrators were shot down at the local airport. The government accused them of alleged acts of terrorism, despite a lack of evidence that the civilians used firearms.

Recently, Odilon Farfan Anaya, President of the Human Rights Without Borders Organization, emphasized that these deaths must not remain unpunished. “It is a response from the people against these injustices and abuses, within the parameters of a crime against humanity,” he stated.
“This act was trampled by the president, her entourage, and her former ministers, who massacred 18 comrades in cold blood on January 9, 2023, in Juliaca”, he denounced.
